Picnic in the Macedon Ranges

From the moment Joan Lindsay penned the novel ‘ Picnic at Hanging Rock', the Macedon Ranges has become synonymous with the humble picnic. A quick explore of our region and it is not difficult to discover why. With so many beautiful spaces to enjoy and an abundance of local produce to pack into your basket, a relaxing afternoon picnic has never looked quite so appealing.

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite picnic spots and delicious basket fillers for your next visit to the Macedon Ranges.

OUR FAVOURITE PICNIC SPOTS

If this is your first visit to the Macedon Ranges, you really can’t go past a picnic at Hanging Rock. Enjoy wide-open grassy spaces, perfect for a family cricket match. The reserve has a playground, BBQ areas and shelter should the weather not be in your favour. Of course, the walk to the top of the Rock is a must. Pick up lunch or a coffee at the Hanging Rock Cafe

A drive over Mt Macedon will have you peering through the large gated properties, wondering what could possibly be on the other side. Luckily for us, some of the gardens regularly open their doors to the public and are a beautiful place to explore. Tieve Tara and Forest Glade are both highly recommended.

A little more off the beaten track, this hidden gem is a great spot to picnic in warmer weather. Located on the Coliban River at the end of a 1 km dirt road, kids will love exploring the rock pools and waterfalls and climbing over boulders. A beautiful bush setting for some lunch and a swim.

While not technically in the Macedon Ranges, this extinct volcano between Daylesford and Castlemaine is a unique picnic spot, especially if you have a dinosaur-loving child in your house. You can walk around the top of the volcano in about 15 minutes, then enjoy lunch in a tree-lined crater. During the cooler months, the campfire pits are perfect for cooking marshmallows.

The Kyneton River Walk along the Campaspe River is a stunning 2.5km stroll through oak-lined paths with sweeping views across farmland. Backing on to the Botanical Gardens and the Children’s Park, there are many spots to stop, eat and play. Keep your eyes open for platypuss and kangaroos. BBQ facilities are available at the Children’s Park.

Of course, for our Lawson Lodge guests, there are many beautiful spots on our property to picnic, including Paddy’s picnic spot by the lake. Enjoy fishing and canoeing in the warmer months, or light the campfire in the winter. Bring the Macedon Ranges to you with some of our local picnic hamper options.
