Macedon & Mount Macedon, a locals guide.

The village of Mount Macedon was recently recognised as the best Tiny Town at the Victorian Tourism Awards, followed by being placed 3rd nationally. As locals, it's not difficult to understand why. Beautiful scenery and bushwalks, great food and a lovely quiet community make this a great place to live. Now that the secret is out, we’ve put together the locals' guide to the best things to do when visiting Macedon and Mount Macedon.

A locals guide to Macedon & Mount Macedon. Lawson Lodge Country Estate.

Enjoying the Outdoors

If you love a good bushwalk with a lookout point, we recommend the Camel’s Hump or the Mount Towrong walk. The Macedon Ranges walking trail, which is a 30km circuit linking both of these points, is great for keen hikers. Download the AllTrails app as a guide to all the local bush walks.

For golfing enthusiasts, the Mt Macedon Golf Course is a stunning little 9-hole course. You’ll meet plenty of furry locals on the course (I mean the kangaroos, of course), and you can walk up to the Mount Macedon pub for a beer after the game.

Local teens love to hang out and swim at the reservoir in summer, and Sanatorium Lake is a beautiful space for picnics, bird watching and bush walks. Stanley Park is another great spot for hiking and has a playground for the kids. Find out about ordering a local picnic box to take with you.

Something to Drink?

Mt Towrong Winery continues to be one of our favourites. They offer an outstanding range of Italian-style wines, as well as a range of exceptional, award-winning spirits through Mountain Distilling. Stop in for tastings through their cellar door, and if you have time, their rustic Italian menu is pretty amazing too.

Mt Macedon Hotel is a gorgeous pub, and the beer garden out the back is a great spot to relax on a warm day.

Accommodation

Lawson Lodge is the best option for large groups of over 15 people; however, for small groups or couples, there are some other great options in Macedon and Mt Macedon. We recommend Braeside Mt Macedon, The Cottage at Bolobek, Cottage by the Bowser or Hanging Rock Views. They are all small, locally run businesses that take exceptional care in providing outstanding guest service.
